Tip the Hourglass
I've been asked to do some fairly strange things, but this was one of the most bizarre. Go back in time? Even with a dragon saying it was so, I could not believe it.
But it was.
I saw it as we flew over and could not resist. With the dragon's illusions, we could go back into the town, allowed in by the guards for the first time in so long. How could I not try?
It was exactly as I remembered. Which, I suppose, should have been my first clue.
We sat in the inn, resting for a moment, listening to the sounds of clinking glasses and quiet conversation, and I just enjoyed being there again. I'd worried about him walking in wearing his north-forged armour, but no one paid us any heed.
When the crash came from the kitchen, we looked up. It's a natural reaction, one I couldn't have stopped even if I'd recognised the significance of the sound. But I didn't, not until I heard his gasp of recognition and understood who I was seeing
The waitress, who'd dropped the tray of glasses...
... was me.
