It's a circle that never stops, just keeps escalating pain. Someone hurts us, we hurt them, they hurt us again for that, and it just keeps going until no one can remember who started it or why, and it no longer matters.

I know Cairne will return. His people still need him. He is a shaman, he is a leader, he will be back. Just as Thrall was. But just as with Thrall, it doesn't make this any easier to bear.
It doesn't lessen the shock.
So many of us, mourning quietly, gathered around his fallen body. Even after he was taken to be treated, we stayed. People eventually left, called by other matters, some motivated by revenge, but a few of us, we still stayed, and waited.
Because we had another leader, a friend, to watch over.
