Each and every person connects to the whole in their own means and on their own terms. The individual's connection is fundamental, and an individual responsibility.
How then, do you manage to maintain your own connection, and yet understand that what you deem respectful may be insulting or damaging to another? Even a blessing of the Light, while respectful to one, may be an offence to another.
Irreverence (when used to describe the absence of respect, not outright defilement, or hostility, as extremes in all things are to be avoided) allows the only means to afford lack of offence, or at the least, equal offence to all.
A position of irreverence distances the individual from the opinions and beliefs of others enough to realise that nothing is truly sacred, out of context, not even the things we ourselves hold to be so.
