Journal Page Thirteen: Of Masks
Apr. 3rd, 2007 12:55 pmA mask is painted upon our skin, for the world to see
We weave sweet lies with veiled eyes,
And whisper to all, "This is me."
I was trying to make a joke. Maybe I'm unpracticed at it. But really, except for the rare Hallow's End treat, or the witch's illusion, it does seem to be makes things I get turned into. I'm willing to be even the frog is, though I'm usually too busy hopping around to check.
Maybe Leiral missed the "turned into" part of that. I'm a woman now, yes, but I always was.
I think that's the part Nenuial doesn't understand. Sylarne got it, at least I think he did from what he was saying. We all wear masks, whether they're wood or flesh. The one we can't take off is the one we decide to call our own face, but it's as must a cover as any other. Maybe you have to be stuck with one you can't claim to see that. This face is mine, but it's no more or less me than the Voodoo mask I wear. I just means that I can pass a mirror with a nod instead of the desire to smash the reflection to pieces.
Sometimes, I think it would be so much easier if we could see beneath these masks we wear. Maybe then we wouldn't be so surprised when someone turns on us. Poor Leiral, I don't know what it's like to have family turn on you, or to have your loved for someone used as a weapon. I understand, I think, why she let Szeharia go, but I still kind of think we should have let Uzil take her out, whatever Siwili said about fighting in the Bluffs.
She brought that amulet as proof, and I think it had much of the desired effect. Not all of it, though. After all, it's unlikely to keep us out of the Outlands. Really, though, it's proof of very little, even if she has seen him. After all, the best lies are those built on truths, so I wouldn't be surprised if parts of her story check out.
Whatever the mix she's serving us, it's unlikely to be over quickly. I'm not entirely certain we've seen all her masks yet.
